NHSDLC — A terrific chance of practice and learning (NHSDLC: 北京大学高中生美式辩论邀请赛) The three-day NHSDLC has already been a past, but I am still excited about it. I’ve managed to achieve a certificate of the TOP 10 debaters. This result comes from my personal efforts and of course, the teachers’ valuable guidance and encouragement. Looking back on the whole process, I really think it is a terrific chance of practice and learning, and once again I realize that “no pains, no gains”. |
When I first heard of the debate, my reaction was “How difficult it will be!”
The topic is “On balance the rise of China is beneficial to the interests of the USA”. Since I’m not so good at talking about things concerning politics, I almost decided at once that I would not participate. But my head teacher Miss Chen and many of my classmates encouraged me to have a try. Finally I persuaded myself to meet the challenge. But getting up the courage was only the half of it! When I set about collecting materials, I found there was so much information that I could hardly tell which was valuable. I felt so frustrated that I thought there would be no way that we could achieve any qwards. Thanks to the timely instructions of the teachers, especially the guidance from Mr. Qian, I began to realize how to classify the mass of the materials. As time went by, following the advice our teachers had given us, I found myself greatly improved though it was still far from perfect. We had several debates in our school, which were between the Chinese team and English team. It could sound funny but it was obviously a good chance to practice and improve our debating ability. Very soon the competitive part in me was winning over my lack of confidence. After the last debate in our school, our headmaster Mr. Yao gave us the final instructions and encouragement, which made me even more confident. With the hope from everybody around us, we set off for the PKU.
There were altogether 54 teams from all over the country, all of which were from well-known senior high schools. Needless to say,the competition would be tough, but we were ready! The debate was relatively easy at the very beginning, but became harder and harder later on. It was not only a challenge to our intelligence but also a physical test, for we had to have five debates in one day, with 50 minutes each. We were not afraid in face of such difficulties and both did our best. It was already half past seven in the evening when we finally finished the last debate. Almost exhausted as we were, we felt good. The result is four wins and one defeat. Although it is not perfect, we are satisfied with it, concerning the fact that it is the first time for all of us. Good news for me is that I was awarded Top Ten Debater, which I think is recognition of my talent.
I am proud that I am a member of Nantong Middle School, because but for her good reputation, I would never have the chance. I am grateful to my teachers, because without their help, I would never be able to achieve the success. I feel quite lucky to have had this chance to compete in the famous PKU with our excellent opponents coming from outstanding high schools all over China. I feel lucky because I have learned a lot from the debates and my opponents. I feel lucky because I did not let my school down. Let’s go back to the original purpose of this debate—to make China and America learn more about each other and make the future cooperation stronger than ever. This hope is attached to our generation. So I believe that if we do what we must do, then I have no doubt, that all across the two countries, from Washington to Beijing, from New York to Shanghai, the governments will put aside the ideological differences, the people will benefit from the cooperation between the two huge nations, and after the long-term misunderstanding and conflicts, a brighter day will eventually come.
