Teaching plans for “Chinese Pottery”(TOEFL READING)
Teaching Aims:
1. Enable students to get the main idea and basic structure of the passage.
2. Enable students to acquire ability of locating information (skimming and scanning)
3. Enable students to understand the charisma of Chinese Pottery and its influence on western culture.
4. Get the students to improve their ability of completing the toefl questions.
Teaching Difficulties:
How to get the students to appreciate the influence of Chinese pottery upon on western culture
How to get the students get interested in the topic and arouse a heated discussion on the topic
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1: Warming-up
Introduce the topic of “China” and “china”, and ask students make a differentiation between the two terms and present some pictures of Chinese Pottery “ceramics, stoneware, earthenware and so on.
Organize students to make a group discussion on it.
Step 2:
Lead the students to skim the text and try to get the basic structure or main idea of the passage. (Using the techniques of skimming presented in the last few periods)
In 3 minutes, ask students to fill in blanks of the summary of the passage.
Step 3: Detailed Reading
Ask the students to read the passage in detail, and guide the students to read details by presenting the students some mind charts or picture hints.
Step 4: Doing RELATED TOEFL QUESTIONS.
During the step 3, ask the students to do related toefl reading questions.
Step 5: Ask students to make a summary (in group work) and present in front the class.
Homework:
Write the summary and complete rest of toefl questions.
Reflections:
More methods of activating students’ interest in reading should be figured out.
